Description
This tree was so intriguing I had to paint it. This tree is a Sitka spruce, which normally are towering, straight giants. This little guy, however, is growing on some fallen logs in a quiet backwater of Connell Lake, which was created by a dam on Ward Creek back in 1952. The dam provided water to the Ketchikan Pulp Company mill in Ward Cove that was closed in 1997. The old mill site now is a cruise ship port that was built by an Alaska company in collaboration with Norwegian Cruise Lines. I sat on a boardwalk trail to paint this on a calm morning, intrigued not only by this brave little tree, but also by the mist hanging in the distant forested hills and the bright winter greens in the foreground moss.
