Description

Experience the Alaska rainforest through this painting of a Southeast Alaska creek that flows into Ketchikan’s Ward Lake. Ward Lake’s trail is the most popular here with both locals and visitors alike. On the morning that I painted this, in January, 2026, I sat on my little stool on a gravel bar in the middle of the creek to paint the large culvert underneath the trail that allows the creek — and the spawning salmon in the autumn — to flow underneath the trail. That morning’s adventure was so calm, with the gentle, misty breeze floating downstream, my border collies playing nearby and the ravens calling to each other in the Sitka spruce trees above.
